First Insight and Wharton Baker Retailing Center found that consumers are willing to pay for more sustainable goods, surprising many retail executives. The report revealed that a knowledge gap exists between what consumers actually want and what retailers presume they want when it comes to sustainable items, presenting opportunities for retailers to boost customer loyalty and increase sales by offering more eco-friendly product options.

The report found that two-thirds of consumers said they would pay more for sustainable products, but two-thirds of retailers thought consumers were not willing to spend more for eco-friendly products. Almost 75 percent of consumer respondents indicated they valued sustainability over brand names. Over 94 percent of retailers believed the opposite, that consumers want brand name over sustainability.

Check out these sustainable rag options and fill your consumers’ desire for sustainable goods.

Managing cables around the house can seem overwhelming, especially with more and more smart devices coming out and needing an outlet to plug into. Using various products can help keep your cables organized together and away from small children and pets, who can easily get tangled up in cords or chew on them.

Cable raceways from CableOrganizer allow customers to easily run long cables throughout their homes, such as a long ethernet cord from their wireless router to their computer in the office, which may be a few rooms over. The cable raceways keep the cables tucked away in a protective covering that won’t damage the cable and will keep it out of the way and remove it as a potential tripping hazard.

Keeping cords together behind appliances such as TVs can be hard or can be an eyesore. Using Heat Shrink Tubes from Essentra Components can keep the cords all together in one area, wrapping them together with a protective outer covering to keep them safe.

Cordini offers a different way to manage longer cables. If an appliance or item has a long cord but is located right next to the power outlet, the Cordini outlet cover creates a place to store the long cord under the face plate. The wire wraps around the inside of the cover and then the cover slips over the outlet face plate for a snug fit. This hides the cord and keeps it protected from potentially being pulled out of the wall or creating a tripping hazard.

Building on its commitment to drive member growth online and in-store, Do it Best has selected a proven e-commerce leader to steer its e-commerce division, announcing Allison Flatjord as the company’s vice president of e-commerce. She replaces Nick Talarico, who was recently promoted to executive vice president of sales and marketing.

Flatjord joined Do it Best in 2022 as the company’s director of e-commerce. Under her leadership as vice president of e-commerce, the company has developed a winning strategy and state-of-the-art platform to advance its members’ online competitiveness while also driving more traffic to their stores. She will be featured at the Do it Best Spring Market Kickoff on March 11 in Orlando, Florida, where she will introduce members to the new e-commerce solution.

“While we’ve actively supported our members’ online sales efforts for more than two decades, we launched our new e-commerce division last year to demonstrate its critical importance in growing member sales,” says Dan Starr, president and CEO. “Allison has been centrally involved in that initiative from the very beginning, and I couldn’t be more pleased to see her now leading this team. Our members will be excited about the options we’ve developed to take their e-commerce to the next level.”

Prior to Do it Best, Flatjord was the chief marketing, merchandising and digital officer for a national party supply retailer where she actively grew online sales and repeat purchases while leading an overhaul of their web platform. She also served as the chief marketing and merchandising officer for a national clothing and lifestyle brand where she directed the replatforming of their e-commerce site, resulting in a doubling of sales in just four years. Flatjord holds a masters in business administration from the Harvard Business School.

“I’m honored to step into this leadership position at Do it Best and contribute to such an important initiative,” says Flatjord. “We have built a world-class e-commerce team to drive store sales and traffic that will help our members compete and win for years to come.”

PPG reported financial results for the fourth quarter of 2022 and the full-year 2022. Net sales were down slightly from Q4 2021, posted at $4,185,000 for Q4 2022. Net income was also down 11% from $267,000,000 in 2021 to $238,000,000 in 2022. Adjusted net income dropped 4% from $298,000,000 to $286,000,000 in Q4.

For the full year 2022, net sales from continuing operations were approximately $17.7 billion, up about 5% versus the prior year. Organic sales were higher by 8% driven by higher selling prices. Net income in 2022 decreased versus 2021 due to raw material cost inflation, lower sales volumes, unfavorable foreign-currency translation and higher manufacturing costs related to supply and labor disruptions, partially offset by higher selling prices, restructuring cost savings and acquisition-related synergies.

In 2022, the company paid $570 million in dividends. Capital expenditures totaled about $520 million, which was higher than the prior year due to more normalized spending. The company had about $1 billion remaining on its current share repurchase authorization at the end of 2022.

“We continued to make good progress on our focus to achieve full operating margin recovery, as year-over-year earnings improved in both segments despite more acute pandemic-related demand disruptions in China,” says Tim Knavish, PPG president and chief executive officer. “This earnings improvement was driven by aggregate selling price increases that totaled 19% on a two-year stacked basis, as we remained focused on mitigating the significant cumulative cost inflation incurred the past two years.”

“Looking ahead, we remain highly focused on building further momentum to restore margins in line with our historical profile. In the first quarter, we will continue to prioritize supporting our customers through superior service and products, executing our cost-savings initiatives, and optimizing inventory. We expect the overall demand environment to remain consistent sequentially with the fourth quarter with soft economic activity remaining in Europe and China. However, as the year progresses, we anticipate several positive catalysts that will enable earnings improvement, including certain PPG commercial initiatives with our valued customers and the continued rebound in demand for our technology-advantaged aerospace products. Other catalysts include moderating raw material costs, coatings demand stabilization in Europe beginning in the second quarter, and strong economic recovery in China as the pandemic reopening progresses. Finally, with fewer supply chain disruptions we expect ample commodity raw material availability and improved manufacturing efficiencies. Lastly, I am looking forward to leading PPG in my new role and want to thank our customers for selecting PPG as their supplier of choice, our shareholders for their confidence, and our global employees who demonstrate The PPG Way by making it happen every day.”

Minwax® brand revealed its 2023 Color of the Year: Aged Barrel. Neutral, warm and dependable, Aged Barrel celebrates wood’s imperfections to help DIYers—both new and experienced—bring touches of their unique personal styles to any room.

“As new routines push us to adjust in many aspects of life, simplified color choices help provide brief moments of reprieve,” says Sue Kim, director of color marketing for Minwax. “The 2023 Color of the Year, Aged Barrel, delivers just that—a reassuring and nurturing mood that embraces the organic beauty, natural aging and inherent imperfections of wood surfaces to inspire more mindful living.”

The 2023 Color of the Year is geared toward helping people connect the past and future to create their own stories. Its classic simplicity is approachable and inviting, providing the flexibility many desire in their most personal spaces where they retreat and come together to start new traditions, while also honoring and reflecting on the passage of time. With a soft gray undertone reflecting material strengthened over the years, Aged Barrel anchors individuals to their pasts with its vintage, handcrafted look and touch of sophistication that serves as the foundation for a variety of complementary color palettes.

Minwax developed three corresponding color palettes to showcase and complement the 2023 Color of the Year in any room of your home. Aged Barrel pairs well with dark wood tones, all-over grays, chalky neutrals and bold pops of color and is complemented by a coordinating selection of Minwax wood stains, including Charcoal Gray, Silvered Gray, Dark Walnut, Gray Mist, Rustic Beige, Vintage Orange, Botanical and Gentle Yellow. Whether adding character to a cherished object or refurbishing an antique find, consumers can use Aged Barrel interior stain to bring out wood’s natural grain and inherent, imperfect beauty while maintaining its texture and adding joyful, nature-inspired accents.

“Here, rustic style and modern sensibility harmonize,” says Kim. “Aged Barrel highlights the grain and natural beauty of the wood itself to soothe and comfort as it bridges the gap between two very different eras.”

Hardlines Distribution Alliance (HDA) has announced the new dates for the 2023 Group Merchandising Conference (GMC). The conference will be held May 8-11 at the Embassy Suites Atlanta – Buckhead. The new dates will allow attendees to take advantage of a spring timeline and provide more time for distributor attendees to strategize their own fall markets.

“With the earlier time frame, we are excited for all attendees to embrace more opportunities that will result in more growth and development of intra-group business,” says Steve Synnott, CEO at HDA.

In addition to the new dates, all attendees will be treated to the highly interactive and quality event they have grown to expect at the GMC. With the opportunity to display products, brochures and digital resources in each hotel suite, manufacturers can count on uninterrupted, one-on-one meetings with dozens of distributor members at one venue. With this format designed to maximize ROI, all attendees can look forward to forging relationships that build new business opportunities.

“The GMC is not your typical trade show,” says Jim Depolo, national sales manager with VP Racing. “It is a much better format to actually interact with and gain new business from new and existing customers.”

Manufacturer and distributor attendees can also take advantage of the social networking opportunities at receptions and meals that take place throughout the event. Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood boasts dozens of restaurants near the hotel, allowing guests to easily make dinner plans on the Monday and Wednesday evening of the conference.

“Having the ability to meet together as manufacturers and distributors brings great value to all parties,” says Rick Berry, a buyer at Buttery Company. “Key relationships are built in these meetings that could potentially have huge success in many aspects of our business.”
